MUV Dance Company
“The connection and intimacy between performers clearly extended off the stage and into the crowd...”
—Attitude: The Dancers' Magazine

SANKOFA is an evening of new and classic work presented by Brooklyn’s very own Movement for the Urban Village Dance Company (MUV). Under the direction of Shalewa Mackall, MUV performs original contemporary dance rooted in the techniques and traditions of the African diaspora. SANKOFA celebrates the Akan principle, which invites us to move forward in full awareness and embrace what has come before. The performance features the premiere of Calling Names—a dance with live music that explores identity, lineage, the journey from personhood to spirithood, and the role of ancestors in our personal evolution through life—as well a classic work from MUV’s repertory.
