Seán Curran Company and Third Coast Percussion
From his roots in Irish step dance to a four-year run as an original member of STOMP, Seán Curran comes alive to the beat of a drum. In celebration of their 20th anniversary, the choreographer and his company collaborate with Grammy Award-winning, Chicago-based ensemble Third Coast Percussion for a landmark evening of new and classic work inspired by the primordial nature of percussion.
First, they reimagine the hallmark 2000 piece Abstract Concrete, a spirited study of pairing and partnership set to a loose, kinetic rhythm. Then, Curran himself performs as part of a quartet in the tour-de-force body percussion work Quadrabox Redux. Finally, the company presents the New York premiere of Everywhere All the Time, set to celebrated composer Donnacha Dennehy’s Surface Tension, a “magnificently energetic” (The New York Times) piece inspired by the Irish bodhran drum, with set design by the late landscape architect Diana Balmori.
