CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: History (Britain), Human Rights

During the height of the British slave trade, Charles “Sancho” Ignatius lived a daringly determined life. He was born on a slave ship but never a slave, was immortalized by the great English painter Thomas Gainsborough, and in 1774 became the first black man to cast a vote in a Parliamentary election—in addition to being a writer, musician, composer, and general man of refinement.

Celebrated British actor Paterson Joseph tells the remarkable story of Sancho in this endlessly revealing and often funny one-man show that casts new light on the often misunderstood narratives of the African-British experience.

Each workshop includes a high-definition recorded selection of a BAM mainstage production, an online study guide resource that includes preparatory information and activities for teachers and students, and an engaging virtual workshop facilitated live by a BAM Teaching Artist streamed directly to your classroom.
