CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: History, Civil Rights

The existence of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in America stretches back before the Civil War. After the war and into the 20th century, these institutions flourished and began to shape black life, dismantling desegregation and giving rise to the black middle class. And yet despite their extraordinarily significant role in our nation’s history, the story of HCBUs is a largely untold one. In Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, filmmaker Stanley Nelson presents the first and only feature documentary and multi-platform project to share a rich mosaic of stories about HBCUs past and present.

Includes pre-film workshop and post-film discussion
