As the 2020 election approaches, we reflect on the 1972 National Black Political Convention, which brought together leading figures—including Amiri Baraka, Coretta Scott King, Dr. Betty Shabazz, Dick Gregory, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Queen Mother Moore—and thousands of citizens to set a self-determined Black political agenda. Considered too militant for television broadcast at the time, director William Greaves’ documentary Nationtime comes to BAM’s virtual cinemas this week, newly restored to its original length and visual quality.

New Yorkers can hit the polls in person beginning Saturday for early voting, which lasts until November 1. We're also extending the virtual run of V’s (formerly Eve Ensler) That Kindness, a stirring and timely portrait of the nurses on the frontlines, which was just named a NYT Critic’s Pick. And it wouldn’t be October without BAMboo! Our beloved Halloween party has transformed for the digital space into an action-packed afternoon of magic, dancing, costume contests, and more family-friendly revelry.
