Directed by Martin Ritt | 1957

With John Cassavetes, Sidney Poitier, Jack Warden, Kathleen Maguire, Ruby Dee

A troubled army deserter (Cassavetes) befriends a black railway worker (Poitier), while laboring beside him in the New York City dockyards—but antagonism from a racist foreman has tragic consequences. This gritty film gris—which makes striking use of its lower Manhattan rail yard backdrop—howls with defiant anger at racial prejudice and social injustice.
