Directed by Fred M. Wilcox | 1956

With Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Jack Kelly

A rarity among 1950s sci-fi flicks, Forbidden Planet is a big-budget, thoughtful, and inventive film (loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s The Tempest) with startlingly imaginative special effects. Not to mention it marks the debut of the greatest movie robot of all time: Robby the Robot, who would appear in countless other films and TV programs. Inspired by Forbidden Planet and other films of its kind, author Matthew Buchholz rewrites history to include monsters, robots, zombies, and more with his new book Alternate Histories of the World (out on October 1 through Perigee).
