Directed by Martin Scorsese | 1973

With Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, David Proval, Amy Robinson, Richard Romanus

“The acting and editing have such an original, tumultuous force that the picture is completely gripping.”
—Dave Kehr, The Chicago Reader

Scorsese took Walsh’s portraits of ethnic gangsterism and brought them stunningly up to date in his breakthrough feature. Capturing the lawlessness-reigns atmosphere of 1970s Manhattan with a breathless, vérité energy, Mean Streets follows two sons of Little Italy: Charlie (Keitel), a reluctant Mafioso tormented by Catholic guilt, and Johnny Boy (a riveting young De Niro), his unhinged cousin whose temper threatens to explode at any moment.
