Directed by Spike Lee | 1990

With Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes

Jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam (a magnetic Denzel Washington) is a New York City bandleader with a gambling-addicted manager (Lee) and female troubles—but his single-minded narcissism keeps Bleek from realizing he’s headed for ruin both artistically and romantically. Lee neatly subverts the usual “tortured artist” clichés in this bracing musical drama, loaded with knockout visual flourishes and featuring a score by the director’s own jazzman father.
