Directed by George Romero | 1968

With With Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, Karl Hardman

"Over its short, furious course, the picture violates so many strong taboos—cannibalism, incest, necrophilia—that it leaves audiences giddy and hysterical."
—Dave Kehr, The Chicago Reader

Sonia Shah, the author of The Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years, comes to BAM to discuss a different kind of epidemic, George Romero’s zombie classic Night of the Living Dead. A gruesome plague precipitates a gory zombie uprising in Romero’s low-budget, taboo-shattering horror milestone. The nightmarish premise is rooted in all-too-real fears of contagion and infectious disease, which Romero cannily exploits to profoundly disturbing effect.
