Directed by James Gray | 2014

With Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner, Angela Sarafyan, Dagmara Dominczyk

"It's as if the ghosts of an older, vanished New York have been freed from the tyranny of faded photographs and allowed, once again, to move, think, and feel."
—Stephanie Zacharek, The Village Voice

Young Polish immigrant Ewa (a thrilling Cotillard) finds herself caught in a dangerous battle of wills with a shady burlesque manager (Phoenix) in James Gray’s richly detailed period tragedy. As a charismatic magician (Renner) starts to compete for Ewa’s affections, The Immigrant becomes a devastating reflection on family loyalty, urban disillusionment, and the unpredictable twists and turns of human motivation. Working with cinematographer Darius Khondji (Se7en, Amour), Gray imagines 1920s Manhattan as a dusty, sepia-toned dreamworld, by turns both luminous and ashen. Based on the stories and experiences told to Gray by his grandparents, The Immigrant is a true personal epic.
