Directed by Roland Joffé | 1986

With Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Ray McAnally.

Joffé’s ambitious follow-up to his Oscar-winning film The Killing Fields is this lushly photographed historical epic, which chronicles the religious passions and political intrigue of 18th-century South America. Seeking redemption after killing his own brother, a slave trader (De Niro) joins forces with Jesuit missionaries working to establish peace among the natives, Spanish, and Portuguese. Morricone’s Golden Globe-winning score reflects this clash of cultures with a stunning mix of Spanish guitars, tribal drumming, and liturgical music.
