“One of the great epic films of our day.”
—The New York Times
Twentieth Century-Fox nearly went bankrupt producing this colossal historical epic, which was plagued by massive cost overruns, had to be relocated from London to Rome midway through, and was further beset by a hugely scandalous public affair between its stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In the end, though, the studio’s spare-no-expense approach paid off in what is perhaps the epitome of Hollywood spectacle, driven by Taylor’s diva-defining performance.
