Directed by Damian Marcano | 2013

With Muhammad Muwakil, Lou Lyons, Jamie Lee Phillips, Penelope Spencer, Errol Sitahal

Damian Marcano’s debut feature is an exploration of the gritty underworld of Trinidad’s capital, Port-of-Spain. Dispelling the prevailing perception of the city as a Carnival-centric paradise, Marcano’s depiction of lower-class strife has drawn comparisons to Brazil’s City of God and classic Jamaican crime film The Harder They Come. Starring mostly first-time actors and featuring powerful visuals and a soca-filled soundtrack, “this film will raise some serious debates on the social, moral, and racial issues [in Trinidad]” (Trinidad & Tobago Guardian).

Screens with Maharaki's Vivre (2013) 13min. A teacher asks the students in her class: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While his joyful classmates respond, Tom, a quiet 10-year-old boy, slips away. In French with English subtitles.

This screening is part of the Caribbean Film Series, which presents feature films made by Caribbean filmmakers that highlight the richness, uniqueness, and viability of Caribbean cinema to Brooklyn, home to the largest population of Caribbean nationals in the United States, and to all New York City residents and visitors.  For more information visit the Caribbean Film Academy website.
