Directed by Christophe Honoré | 2014

With Amira Akili, Sébastien Hirel, Mélodie Richard, Damien Chapelle

If you missed this screening of Métamorphoses, it plays again in Rendez-Vous with French Cinema at IFC Center.

Christophe Honoré’s ambitious undertaking brings reimagined tales from Ovid’s magnum opus to the screen. The narrative poem is transplanted to present-day France, where Jupiter (Sébastien Hirel) absconds with schoolgirl Europa (newcomer Amira Akili) and encounters Narcissus, Orpheus, Bacchus, and humans repeatedly changed into animals. Honoré (Love Songs, a 2008 Rendez-Vous selection) renders scenes of breathtaking natural beauty and, as befits the gods’ dalliances with mortals, near-constant eroticism. A cinematic experience like no other.
