Of the many sharp cinematic references peppering Bamboozled, among the most striking are its nods to Sidney Lumet’s furious and freewheeling satire about the runaway influence of television on the general public. Peter Finch posthumously won an Academy Award for portraying Howard Beale, the fraying, manic newscaster cynically used by ruthless executive Diane Christensen (Faye Dunaway, who also won an Oscar) to garner ratings.
