Directed by Andrzej Wajda | 1962

With Olivera Markovic, Ljuba Tadic, Kapitalina Eric

Lust, adultery, and murder in remotest Russia: Polish cinematic giant Andrzej Wajda (Ashes and Diamonds) offers a striking adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District in this Yugoslavian production. In a rural village, the extramarital affair of a conniving merchant’s wife (Markovic) results in tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. Wajda enhances the psychological intensity via masterfully composed widescreen compositions.
