Directed by Jean-Luc Godard | 1961

With Anna Karina, Jean-Claude Brialy, Jean-Paul Belmondo

“Ms. Karina... gestures backward, toward Louise Brooks; sideways toward Audrey Hepburn; and forward to Audrey Tautou. Here, mugging and sighing, weeping and giggling, she is pretending to be a movie star—and in the process becoming one.”
—A. O. Scott, The New York Times

As part of Anna in New York, French cinema icon Anna Karina's citywide tour presented by Rialto Pictures, BAMcinématek screens a gorgeous 35mm print of A Woman Is a WomanJean-Luc Godard's beloved ’Scope tribute to MGM musicals. The vibrant Karina portrays a married woman yearning for a child who, in reaction to her lover’s indifference, seeks the sexual interest of his best friend in hopes of conceiving. Featuring the music of composer Michel Legrand, Godard's first color film is "a neorealist musical—that is, a contradiction in terms."
