Directed by Vittorio De Sica | 1948

With Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell

“The picture is a pure exercise in directorial virtuosity.”
—Variety

Bresson’s striking use of non-professional actors (or “models,” as he called them) had its roots in Italian neorealism, exemplified by De Sica’s postwar masterpiece. In a rubble-strewn Rome, a father (Maggiorani) and son (Staiola) scour the city for the man’s stolen bicycle, the source of his poor family’s livelihood. In its heartrending depiction of working-class struggle, Bicycle Thieves showed that “real life” could be stirring cinema.
