Directed by Charles Chaplin | 1931

With Charles Chaplin, Virginia Cherrill, Harry Myers

“A beautiful example of Chaplin's ability to turn narrative fragments into emotional wholes... as eccentric as it is sublime.”
—Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

Like Bresson, Chaplin largely ignored “advances” in filmmaking technology, snubbing the advent of talkies to make this 1931 silent masterpiece (famously the French director’s number one and two pick for best film of all time). The bittersweet tale of The Little Tramp’s love for a blind flower girl, City Lights achieves a sublime balance of balletic physical comedy and heartstring-plucking pathos.

Bresson was, too, a fan, and would cite an anecdote heard from Chaplin, "Chaplin said that the camera captures everything, and he recounted this story. He said that an excellent actress... was in the midst of performing a scene to perfection while the cameras rolled, and it was hot and there were flies in the studio. And while performing this scene to perfection she suddenly thought, 'What if this fly lands on my nose?' And the camera recorded that thought.
