His Kind of Woman
- 7PM
This Howard Hughes-produced cult favorite is part hard-boiled noir, part shaggy-dog spoof of the genre. Robert Mitchum is a terse Angeleno who’s lured to Mexico to be the fall guy in a convoluted plot to smuggle an exiled crime boss back into the States. The sexually charged repartee between Mitchum and Russell keeps things simmering, but Vincent Price upstages everyone as a ham movie actor.
“In production for nearly two years because RKO owner Howard Hughes kept changing his mind about it, this jokily entertaining Robert Mitchum-Jane Russell vehicle is credited to John Farrow, but nearly half of it was reshot by Richard Fleischer, making for a roller coaster of varying tones seldom found in a major studio release. It's a one-of-a-kind noir ride that never takes itself seriously, at one point blithely intercutting between slapstick and torture.” —Joe Dante
