Directed by Robert Bresson | 1959

With Martin LaSalle, Marika Green, Jean Pélégri

“This concentrated, elliptical, economical movie is an experience that never loses its strangeness.”
—J. Hoberman, The Village Voice

Bresson’s forever modern study of spiritual crisis and salvation is a near-perfect distillation of his aesthetic principles and thematic concerns. Loosely based on Crime and Punishment, it chronicles a young man (LaSalle)’s fall from grace as he develops a ritualistic addiction to petty thievery, furtive crimes choreographed by Bresson with an almost sensual attention to the tactile.
