The ’Burbs

Directed by Joe Dante
With Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher
1989, 101min, 35mm

Tom Hanks is the ultimate NIMBY as a white-bread suburbanite who loses it when he becomes convinced that the strange, nocturnal new neighbors are Satanists… or worse. Dante bring an paranoid, high-key style to this dark comic satire of small town Americana, paying tribute to everything from Rear Window to Spaghetti Westerns along the way.

It’s a Gift

Directed by Norman Z. McLeod
With W.C. Fields, Kathleen Howard, Baby LeRoy
1934, 68min, 35mm

The misanthropic genius of W.C. Fields gets perhaps its finest showcase in this classic comedy of aggravation. He mutters and boozes his way through the role of a relentlessly put-upon New Jersey grocer who, when he inherits a small fortune, moves his singularly annoying family out to California, along the way contending with irritants ranging from noisy neighbors to his nemesis, bratty Baby LeRoy.

“In my college years W.C. Fields was as popular as Bogart and The Marx Brothers, but today not so much. Which is a shame, because he was —and still is—a true original. In this one he’s a put-upon small-town everyman battling all forms of modern life, especially his family and fellow townspeople—which allows him to restage some of his classic routines and skits from vaudeville and silent films. A comedy classic.” —Joe Dante
