Directed by Michael Cimino | 1987

With Christopher Lambert, Terence Stamp, Joss Ackland

Channeling the operatic sweep of Visconti’s The Leopard, this adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel—about rebel hero Salvatore Giuliano (Lambert)’s bloody fight for Sicilian independence—is pure Cimino: big, bold, and visually exciting. Though cut by the studio against the director’s wishes, critic Jonathan Rosenbaum calls it “one of Cimino's best films, with a fine sense of spectacle and landscape…the uncredited dialogue of Gore Vidal has a cynical, bantering polish.”
