2 x 50 Years of French Cinema

Dirs. Jean-Luc Godard & Anne-Marie Miéville. With Godard, Michel Piccoli. 1995.

Godard and Miéville’s survey of the first 100 years of French cinema is, perhaps unsurprisingly, caustic, subversive, and frequently funny. Less a celebration than an elegy, it finds Godard mourning the death of film culture while spotlighting masters like Cocteau and Bresson.

Soft and Hard

Dirs. Jean-Luc Godard & Anne-Marie Miéville. With Godard, Miéville. 1985.

Miéville and Godard play themselves in this video work, which finds the couple going about their daily routines while debating the process of filmmaking. It’s a candid, enlightening glimpse into the inner workings of their collaborative relationship.
