2008
Avant-garde visionary Arthur Russell fused downtown disco, 20th-century classical, and folk into otherworldly minimalist compositions, blissful dance singles, and haunting home recordings. This poignant, impressionistic documentary traces Russell’s journey, from his childhood in Iowa, to his years as a fixture of New York City’s underground music scene in the 1970s and 80s, to his premature death from AIDS.
Directed by Phill Niblock
