Directed by Nagisa Oshima | 1968

With Tadanori Yokoo, Rie Yokoyama, Tanabe Moichi

Oshima’s homage to renegade writer and criminal Jean Genet is one of his most stylistically wild. When a young thief (Yokoo) is caught pilfering a book by one of the bookshop’s female employees (Yokoyama), the two embark on a kinky crime spree amid the student riots of 1968 Tokyo. Diary of a Shinjuku Thief explodes with abrupt changes in film stock, fourth wall-breaking agitprop, and experimental kabuki.
