Directed by Jonathan Demme | 2011

Demme trains his ever-humanist camera on perhaps one of his most endearing and inspiring subjects. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, retired restaurant cook Carolyn Parker was the last to leave and the first to return home in the city’s devastated Lower Ninth Ward. Shot over the course of five years, this infinitely compassionate portrait follows the optimistic-against-all-odds Parker as she works tirelessly to rebuild her life and community.
