“de Andrade’s work suggests that the failure of modernity in these tropical settings—and elsewhere—has to do with the period’s rejection of the body, as if the presence of people did not affect perceptions of these spaces.”
—Frieze

Jonathas de Andrade is a contemporary artist based in Recife, a city in the northeast of Brazil with strong ties to indigenous and African cultures, which in recent decades has experienced unprecedented development—to the point of earning the title of Brazilian Silicon Valley. As an acute observer of this metamorphosis, much of de Andrade’s work deals with urbanization and the contradictions of late modernity. This screening includes a number of de Andrade’s single channel video works, including his most recent, O Peixe (The Fish), a highlight from the 2016 São Paulo Biennial, as well as O levante, 4000 disparos, Pacifico, and O Caseiro.
