Jonathas de Andrade is a contemporary artist based in Recife, a city in the northeast of Brazil with strong ties to indigenous and African cultures, which in recent decades has experienced unprecedented development—to the point of earning the title of Brazilian Silicon Valley. As an acute observer of this metamorphosis, much of de Andrade’s work deals with urbanization and the contradictions of late modernity. This screening includes a number of de Andrade’s single channel video works, including his most recent, O Peixe (The Fish), a highlight from the 2016 São Paulo Biennial, as well as O levante, 4000 disparos, Pacifico, and O Caseiro.
Go to the movies just once a month and a BAM membership pays for itself.
