Wes Anderson’s impossibly lovely, pastel nostalgia machine is set during the summer of 1965, when Davy Crockett-capped, 12-year-old orphan Sam (Gilman) runs away from scout camp with his mini-Margot Tenenbaum first love Suzy (Hayward), sending a squadron of kooky adults (including, of course, Bill Murray) chasing after them. The director’s pleasingly overstuffed mise en scéne is wed to one of his most poignant, deeply felt stories.
