Directed by Euzhan Palcy | 1983
With Garry Cadenat, Darling Legitimus, Douts Seck
Acclaimed director Euzhan Palcy crafts a gorgeous vision of black life in French colonial Martinique. Set in a small village in the early 1930s, Sugar Cane Alley traces the progress of teenage orphan José (Cadenat) as he sets out to become more than a plantation worker. Palcy’s evocative debut (which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival) is steeped in the native culture and traditions of Martinique.
