Directed by Nagisa Oshima | 1971

With Kenzo Kawarazaki, Atsuko Kaku, Kei Sato.

Oshima’s typically perverse take on the Ozu-esque family drama chronicles the rigidly traditionalist Sakurada clan, whose attempts to maintain the outward appearance of respectability conceals a legacy of violence and incest. Serving as an allegory for the moral decay of postwar Japan, their collapse is illustrated in a series of elaborate ceremonies—weddings, funerals—that spiral into increasingly demented realms.
