Directed by William Nolte | 1938

With Ralph Cooper, Lena Horne, Laurence Criner

This vivacious jazz musical is one of the finest examples of the so-called race movies produced for black audiences in the 1930s. A 20-year-old Horne makes her film debut as the star attraction of a show produced by a small-time promoter (Cooper, founder and MC of the Apollo Theater’s famed Amateur Nights). She gets her big break—or so it seems—when she’s signed by a New York agent.
