Directed by Stuart Heisler | 1944

Produced by Frank Capra for the US Army and written by black independent filmmaker Carlton Moss, this influential and widely distributed documentary carries a complex legacy. It’s at once a landmark depiction of African-Americans onscreen—an ennobling portrayal of their contributions to society and the war effort—as well as a propagandistic recruitment tool that conveniently erases the reality of racism. Followed by a roundtable discussion.

Wings For This Man
1945, 10min, 16mm
Narrated by Ronald Reagan, this compelling artefact, produced in 1945 by the U.S. Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit, documents the work of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first unit of African-American pilots in the US military formed during World War II.
