Directed by Leslie Thornton

Thornton weaves together found footage, archival photographs, and reenactment in this impressionistic portrait of Isabelle Eberhardt, an adventurer who dressed as a man to travel freely in 19th-century North Africa. Fully embracing the contradictions of the primary information available, Thornton’s essayistic collage “reveals and critiques the hidden interests of convention, method, identity, and the tacit presumptions of the ‘archive’” (Senses of Cinema). Screening with SONGS One Two Three, a portrait of a surreal desert tourist attraction in western China where visitors pose for unseen photographers, continuing Thornton’s career-long investigation of Orientalism, performance, and representation.
