Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda | 2018

With Lily Franky, Ando Sakura, Matsuoka Mayu, Kirin Kiki

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the new film from master director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking) is a richly human exploration of what it means to be a family. Set on the margins of Japanese society, Shoplifters follows a multigenerational band of unrelated outcasts who eke out a meager existence through petty theft but whose love for one another transcends their desperate circumstances. As the authorities close in on them, their makeshift “family” is exposed to the harsh glare of an unfeeling bureaucracy and the strength of their bonds is tested. With infinite compassion, Kore-eda threads gentle humor and heartfelt social commentary into a sublimely moving tale of outsiders fighting for their dignity.
