Directed by Jan Troell | 1971

With Liv Ullmann, Max von Sydow, Eddie Axberg

In celebration of her 80th birthday, we welcome back the legendary actress and director Liv Ullmann (last at BAM directing Cate Blanchett in A Streetcar Named Desire in 2009) for a conversation preceding a hand-picked favorite from her career, Jan Troell’s epic The Emigrants.

This stirring epic of human endurance and perseverance stars world cinema icons Liv Ullmann (in a miraculous, Oscar-nominated performance) and Max von Sydow as a 19th-century Swedish farm couple who leave behind their hardscrabble existence in Europe to search for the American Dream in Minnesota. Strikingly unsentimental and graced with gorgeously poetic, bucolic images, The Emigrants stands as one of the screen’s most moving and immersive depictions of the immigrant experience.
