Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder | 1974

With Brigitte Mira, El Hedi ben Salem, Barbara Valentin

Perhaps the greatest work by the prolific Rainer Werner Fassbinder, this tenderly cutting tale of taboo love updates Douglas Sirk’s classic 1950s melodrama All That Heaven Allows for 1970s Germany, where the relationship between a cleaning woman and a younger Moroccan guest worker is met with incomprehension and prejudice by those around them. Like Sirk, Fassbinder’s brilliantly stylized mise-en-scéne heightens the film’s hammer’s blow emotional impact and biting social critique.
