Perhaps Denis’ darkest, most troubling film to date is a harrowing family tragedy set in a morally bankrupt world of shady financiers, eye-for-an-eye revenge, and, as the title implies, monstrous masculinity. Forgoing linear narrative in favor of fractured, dreamlike dread, Denis conjures a moody neo-noir etched in inky, rain-slicked nightscapes courtesy of cinematographer Agnès Godard.
