Directed by Nadine Labaki | 2018

With Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw, Boluwatife Bankole

Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, Nadine Labaki’s neorealist stunner features a revelatory performance from Syrian refugee Zain Al Rafeea as a feisty 12-year-old Beirut street urchin who, burdened by hardship, takes the drastic step of suing his parents for giving him life. Something like a 21st-century Bicycle Thieves, Capernaum alternates gut-punching realism with moments of poetic beauty for a stirringly human look at the plight of children growing up in an often unforgiving world.
