Director Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) captures the myriad experiences of Black Americans living in the North and South during this time, and gives extra care to Tubman’s hopes, heartbreak, and religious conviction, conjuring “visions of a world that’s as alive with danger as it is with spiritual possibility” (Vanity Fair).
