Hide and Seek

Dir. Su Friedrich
With Chelsea Holland, Ariel Mara, Linzy Martinelli
1996, 65min, 16mm

Like Riggs, the films of Su Friedrich artfully blend narrative, documentary, and avant-garde techniques to explore queer sexuality and identity. In the 1960s-set Hide and Seek, the story of a twelve-year-old girl’s coming of age is interspersed with clips from retro sex education films and interviews with lesbians who share their own stories of growing up to create a rich, kaleidoscopic vision of the joys and heartaches of adolescence.

Janine

Dir. Cheryl Dunye
1990, 10min

Pioneering black lesbian filmmaker Cheryl Dunye (The Watermelon Woman) explores issues of race, class, and sexual identity through the story of her high-school friendship with a white girl.
