Directed by Michael Roemer | 1964

With Ivan Dixon, Abbey Lincoln, Julius Harris

Baby I feel so free inside.” Shot during the tumultuous summer of 1963—in the wake of Medgar Evers’ assassination and the March on Washington—this masterpiece of independent cinema follows a black railroad worker whose growing radicalism threatens his relationship with a preacher’s daughter (jazz legend Abbey Lincoln). According to film historian Donald Bogle: “No other American film has yet treated a black male/female relationship with as much sensitivity.”
