Dir. Istvan Szabo | 1985, 151min
With Klaus Maria Brandauer
In German with English subtitles

Istvan Szabo’s classic 1985 drama about an ambitious young officer—played by the brilliant Klaus Maria Brandauer—in the fading glory of the Austro-Hungarian empire, presented in partnership with Kino Lorber.

Set in the lead up to World War I, Istvan Szabó's Cannes Grand Jury prize-winning Colonel Redl charts the rise of Alfred Redl to head of counterintelligence of the Austro-Hungarian Army. His hidden homosexuality, however, is used against him by enemies of the state, putting both his professional standing and his country's security in dire straits. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1985 Academy Awards, the third of four such Oscar nominations that Szabó's films earned.
