Martin Eden
Virtual
Dir. Pietro Marcello | 129min, 2019
With Luca Marinelli, Jessica Cressy, Vincenzo Nemolato, Carlo Cecchi
Loosely adapted from a 1909 novel by Jack London, but set in a provocatively unspecified moment in Italy’s history, Martin Eden is a passionate and enthralling narrative fresco in the tradition of the great Italian classics. Martin (the marvelously committed Luca Marinelli) is a self-taught proletarian with artistic aspirations who hopes that his dreams of becoming a writer will help him rise above his station and marry a wealthy young university student. The dissatisfactions of working-class toil and bourgeois success lead to political awakening in this enveloping, superbly mounted bildungsroman which was a hit at last year’s New York Film Festival.

A new restoration of Chantal Akerman’s cinematographic elegy, capturing a journey from East Germany to Moscow after the collapse of the Soviet bloc, without dialogue or commentary.

The premiere of a new restoration of Mathieu Kassovitz’s explosive 1995 tale of unrest and policy brutality on the margins of Paris, a still-stunning look at the racial and economic injustices of French society.

Jealousy and obsession simmer on the sunbaked coast of Djibouti in Denis’ masterpiece, a hypnotically languorous take on Billy Budd which turns the everyday rhythms of military life into a dreamlike erotic ballet.
