A new film that captures the making of Chinese artist Maleonn’s ambitious new theater project in response to learning of his father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

When the influential Chinese artist Maleonn learns that his father, Ma Ke, the esteemed and prolific opera director, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he pours all of his artistic energy into an ambitious new theater project: a magical, visually stunning stage production featuring life-size mechanical puppets. Called Papa’s Time Machine, the play features scenes inspired by Maleonn’s memories with his father.

In Our Time Machine, directors Yang Sun and S. Leo Chiang capture father and son in the run-up to the play’s completion as they both confront their mortality. As Ma Ke’s condition deteriorates, Maleonn is torn between the original goal to honor his father and the pressure to achieve commercial success, reflecting on the complexity of his relationship with his father and the prospects of his own personal and professional future.
