Dir. Jennifer Trainer | 76min, 2019
Just three decades ago, the vast brick buildings of MASS MoCA were the abandoned relics of a shuttered factory. Today, they are home to the world’s largest museum for contemporary art. Narrated by Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, this fascinating documentary charts the improbable transformation of MASS MoCA and the changes it brought to the post-industrial town of North Adams. Exploring not just how museums work, but how artists create, Museum Town includes appearances by James Turrell, Laurie Anderson, and David Byrne, and takes a deep dive into the process of celebrated American visual and performance artist Nick Cave as he builds the monumental installation “Until,” a reflection on gun violence, race, and the American Dream.
Museum Town features original music and soundtrack by John Stirratt of Wilco, and songs by the Talking Heads, Sharon Jones, Big Thief, Wilco, and Moses Sumney, among others.
