Dir. Wong Kar Wai | 102min, 1994
With Tony Leung, Faye Wong, Takeshi Kaneshiro
One of the defining works of 90s cinema is newly restored, offering a fresh look at the gloriously shot and utterly unexpected film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai an instant icon.
One of the defining works of 90s cinema, Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai became an instant icon with the release of this striking, highly stylized work. The film follows two stories of heartsick Hong Kong cops (Kaneshiro and Leung), both jilted by ex-lovers, who cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant, staffed by the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Wong). Anything goes in this gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing.
This 4K digital restoration was undertaken from the 35mm original camera negative by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata and Jet Tone. It was supervised and approved by Wong Kar Wai.
