Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread) offers a humorous and visually hypnotic portrait of unlikely first love in this freewheeling coming-of-age story, set in 1970s California. Gary Valentine is a fast-talking teenager who’s outgrown his career as a child actor. During a chance encounter at his high school, he sets his sights on Alana Kane, a bored and volatile 25-year-old. Their strange friendship develops through a whirlwind of cockeyed schemes and romantic overtures in the sunlit streets of the San Fernando Valley, featuring outstanding performances from newcomers Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim, and superb—and often hilarious—appearances by Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, and Tom Waits.
