Dir. Ephraim Asili | 2020, 100min
With Nozipho Mclean, Eric Lockley, Chris Jarell, Julian Rozzell Jr.

“A joyous celebration of Blackness.”
—Indiewire
“One of the best movies of the year. An excellent debut.”
—Sight & Sound
“Literally colorful, unexpectedly funny.”
—Filmmaker Magazine

After nearly a decade exploring different facets of the African diaspora—and his own place within it—filmmaker Ephraim Asili makes his feature-length debut with the story of a community of young Black artists and activists who form a collective in West Philadelphia. Based partly on Asili’s own experiences in a Black liberationist group, this scripted drama about the collective’s attempts to work towards political consensus is interwoven with documentary accounts of the Philadelphia liberation group MOVE, who were the victims of a notorious police bombing in 1985. Finding commonalities through politics, humor, and philosophy, The Inheritance draws on the rich history of Black authors and radicals to create an astonishing ensemble film.
